Critical literacy is perceived to indoctrinate learners when a specific critical analysis of injustice and position on justice are presented as the only morally justifiable path. Critical literacy is perceived as paralysing learners in questioning everything, when it emphasises a multiplicity of perspectives, the limits of knowledge and the complexity and context dependency of positions on justice. When teaching students about critical literacy, there are two instructional frameworks we find helpful. The first is used to teach the critical literacy strategies. The second is used to teach critical literacy lessons in which students apply the strategies after they have learned what they are and how to use them.
